Therapeutic Approaches

these are the concepts which inform most of nicole’s therapy sessions

mindfulness/meditation

A substantial amount of research illustrates the effectiveness of mindfulness and spiritual based practices in managing emotions, developing self awareness, and evolving your personhood. Learning mindfulness can help change your relationship to your thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental manner. Simply put, you observe your thoughts and feelings as a state of being that does not define you.

Cognitive-behavioral

Cognitive behavioral therapy examines patterns in thought, emotions, and behavior. The major concept of CBT is the interaction between triggered thoughts and emotional states. Often the perceptions of ourselves, others, and the world around us can be inaccurate which leads to distress. The aim of CBT is to correct any biases and distortions that exist in our thoughts.

Acceptance and commitment

This type of therapy encourages people to develop a compassionate relationship towards themselves and where they are in their life experience. There is a shift towards accepting one's emotional experience as a process of learning and to become more open to actions consistent with your values. Clarifying your values and the meaning you create in your life is a key component.

psychodynamic

Best known for the classic ‘How does that make you feel?’ question. Psychodynamic therapy is typically open ended in nature and explores deep seated needs, defenses, and desires. The therapist is paying attention to patterns and narratives which usually stem from childhood and involves the interpretation of mental and emotional processes that shapes how a person views Self and the world.

attachment/Family SysteMS

Attachment informed therapy seeks to repair ruptures in relationships to develop and strengthen emotional security, particularly within the parent-child dyad.  According to attachment theory, a secure attachment develops when parents are sensitive to the needs of their children and consistently available. Family systems draws its view of the family as an emotional unit, suggesting behavior is often informed by and inseparable from the functioning of one’s family of origin.

couples THERAPY

Couples therapy aims to equip couples with the tools necessary to relate to each other in healthier ways and develop shared meaning. Interventions are designed to increase intimacy, respect, affection, empathy, remove barriers that create heightened conflict or stagnancy, and replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions.  Therapy explores the idealized concept of familiar love that an individual develops during childhood and what behaviors/patterns are getting played out in adulthood to obtain love and stay emotionally safe.
