Family Constellations has quickly become one of my favorite healing modalities for its ability to reveal the invisible.
The conscious mind LOVES to analyze, control, and understand. Therefore, it can be easy to miss or reject our own personal truths. This is one of the reasons why Family Constellations is so powerful. As the observer of your own constellation, your mind is removed from the equation and you are surrendering into the revelation of the circle.
Intergenerational Trauma
The study of epigenetics shows that stressful events can affect future generations by modifying the DNA and cellular function that is passed down.
This is why we can find ourselves acting out patterns in our family, whether or not we know what happened in our family history.
The cycle of trauma is imprinted through the generations unless it finds a way to heal.
How does Family Constellations work?
During a constellation, a group of people comes together and forms a circle with the intention of offering their awareness and presence. This creates what is known as “the field.” This circle of energy is considered a type of consciousness which allows information to flow through.
A person identified as “the seeker” will present a specific issue or question to the facilitator. They typically share a short summary about their selected topic. The other participants do not have any information about each other ahead of time.
The seeker will then identify “representatives” for the parts of their system including his/herself, family members, or concepts like money or illness. Then, the representatives spontaneously move, feel, and interact in a way that re-presents the dynamics relevant to the issue.
The field provides this information to the representatives through the form of sensations, emotions, and movement. The representatives will follow their own impulses during the constellation and be asked to report on their experience.
Once the insight and hidden narrative has become clear, the facilitator will gently guide the representatives into healing words or “movements of the soul” that will bring clarity, healing, or resolution to the issue.
